Technology Report: Pediatric Economic Dababase Evaluation (PEDE) Project

August 16, 2002

The Canadian Coordinating Office for Health Technology Assessment has published The Pediatric Economic Database Evaluation (PEDE) Project, the first attempt to catalogue, analyze and appraise economic evaluations performed in a pediatric population.

With funding from the Hospital for Sick Children Research Institute, researchers Wendy Ungar and Maria Santos established a comprehensive database of all pediatric health economic publications issued between January 1, 1980 and December 31, 1999. The PEDE database, containing 787 citations over this 20-year period, will be of great value to decision-makers and researchers undertaking methods research, a systematic review or meta-analysis of a particular intervention or condition.

Additional funding from CCOHTA and Institute of Health Economics enabled the critical appraisal of quality and trends of pediatric health economic publications over the 20-year period. The research revealed dramatic growth in the volume of publications and room to improve the quality of evaluations.

The PEDE Project is available online.
