Dr. Ahmed Bayoumi, MSc, MD Dr. Bayoumi is a scientist at the Centre for Research on Inner City Health at the Keenan Research Centre in the Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute, St. Michael’s Hospital. He is also a general internist and HIV physician at St. Michael’s Hospital, and Director of Clinical Epidemiology and Health Care Research in the University of Toronto’s Department of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation. He holds a CIHR/Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care Chair in Applied Health Services Research and Drug Policy, focusing on equity in resource allocation. Other research interests include economic evaluation, quality of life assessment for HIV-related health interventions, and access to health services delivery for marginalized populations, including people living with HIV and injection drug users. Dr. Bayoumi worked with the Ontario HIV Treatment Network Cohort Study and is an adjunct scientist at the Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences. Dr. Bruce C. Carleton, PharmD Dr. Carleton earned a bachelor’s degree in pharmaceutical sciences from Washington State University and a Doctor of Pharmacy from the University of Utah. He joined the University of British Columbia in 1991, and is currently Professor of Pediatrics and Pharmaceutical Sciences and Co-Chair, Division of Translational Therapeutics, in the Faculty of Medicine. He also serves as Director, Pharmaceutical Outcomes Programme, BC Children’s Hospital, and is Senior Clinician Scientist, Child & Family Research Institute, in Vancouver, British Columbia. Dr. Carleton’s research focuses on the impact of drug therapy on human health and quality of life. He is particularly interested in developing better ways to evaluate the effectiveness of drugs, medication-use models designed to improve patient health, and practical surveillance systems to improve the safe use of medication. Dr. Carleton has particular clinical interests in asthma and the clinical use of drugs in children; and the epidemiology, pharmacogenomics, and clinical management of adverse drug events. Ms. Cate Dobhran Ms. Dobhran has a background working in health-related non-profit organizations, including those focussed on HIV/AIDS and home care. For the last 15 years, she has been employed by the Canadian Cancer Society’s Cancer Information Service as an Information Specialist and Resource Developer. She served as a Lay (Public) Reviewer, for two terms, with the National Cancer Institute of Canada (now the Canadian Cancer Society Research Institute). Mr. Frank Gavin Mr. Gavin has taught English at Centennial College in Toronto since 1984, twice serving as Acting Chair. As a volunteer, Frank has served on a school council, the Family Advisory Committee to The Hospital for Sick Children, the Toronto District Health Council, on the Steering Committee of the Canadian Family Advisory Network and several child and youth mental health bodies, and on the Research Advisory Committee of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) Parenting Matters project. He has written several articles and given many presentations related to health care, including some on a topic that combines his professional and his volunteer interests: the effect of stories—often but not always for the better—on health care practice and policy. Mr. Gavin is the recipient of the first Volunteer Humanitarian Award from The Hospital for Sick Children, and the Contribution to Child Health Award from The Canadian Association of Paediatric Health Centres. Dr. John Hawboldt, BSP, ACPR, PharmD Dr. Hawboldt is an Associate Professor (cross-appointment) to the Faculty of Medicine and School of Pharmacy at Memorial University in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador. His primary area of interest is in pharmacy practice, expanding the role of pharmacists in Newfoundland and Labrador, medication use management and safety, and antimicrobial stewardship. He is currently assisting in the implementation of an antimicrobial stewardship program at Eastern Health in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador. Dr. Hawboldt also has a strong interest in curriculum development and assessment. He has had numerous practice sites over the years (medicine, surgery, adult critical care, neonatal critical care, ambulatory care, and infectious disease) and is currently affiliated with the Cystic Fibrosis Program of Eastern Health (both adult and pediatric). He is cross-appointed to the Department of Medicine (Respirology) and the Department of Pharmacy at Eastern Health. Dr. Peter Jamieson, MD, CCFP, FCFP Dr. Jamieson is a family physician and a practising hospitalist in Calgary, Alberta. Dr. Jamieson is currently the Medical Director of the Foothills Medical Centre, a 1,062-bed quaternary academic medical centre. He is a Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Family Medicine at the University of Calgary, with extensive experience in teaching at the undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate levels. Dr. Jamieson has held leadership positions with the Alberta Medical Association, the Canadian Association of Hospitalists, and the Society of Hospital Medicine, and has been broadly consulted on the establishment, monitoring, outcomes, and improvement of inpatient care programs. He has a strong interest in health informatics, and consults to Alberta Health Services and multiple other health delivery systems regarding implementation of clinical information systems, with particular responsibility for system design, clinical decision support, and content management. Dr. Julia Lowe, BSP, Pharm Dowe, MB.ChB (UK), FRCP, M.Med Sci Clinical Epidemiology (Australia) An internal physician with specialty training in diabetes, Dr. Lowe also holds a master’s degree in clinical epidemiology. She is the endocrinology lead in the collaboration between the University of Toronto and the University of Addis Ababa, supporting specialist training in endocrinology in Ethiopia, and in the College of General Surgeons’ Guyana Diabetic Foot Project. Dr. Lowe spent 25 years in Australia and has continuing research interests there, including the Australian Longitudinal Study on Women’s Health, gestational diabetes, and delivery of clinical services to people with type 1 diabetes in rural areas. Current research projects in Toronto include diabetes in pregnancy and improving quality of inpatient diabetes care.Dr. Lowe has been an external evaluator for new pharmaceuticals for the Australian Therapeutic Goods Administration and CADTH, and served on the Editorial Executive Committee of Australian Prescriber. Dr. Kerry Mansell, BSP, Pharm D Dr. Mansell is an Assistant Professor at the College of Pharmacy and Nutrition, University of Saskatchewan. He teaches a variety of therapeutic topics, with a focus on diabetes. His research interests pertain to different aspects of diabetes management, as well as evaluating recent policy changes regarding pharmacist prescribing. Dr. Mansell also maintains a clinical practice in diabetes in the Saskatoon Health Region and continues to work as a community pharmacist. Dr. Irvin Mayers, MD, FRCPC Dr. Mayers obtained his MD and then continued training in Internal Medicine and Respiratory Medicine at the University of Manitoba. He joined the Department of Medicine at the University of Saskatchewan in 1985 and subsequently at the University of Alberta in 1994. His initial research focused on the pathophysiology of sepsis, acute respiratory distress syndrome, and cardiopulmonary bypass. After becoming Division Director of Pulmonary Medicine at the University of Alberta in 2000, these interests shifted to asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and sleep apnea. Dr. Mayers has served as President and Research Chair for the Canadian Thoracic Society, and is currently the Chair for Health Canada’s Scientific Advisory Committee for Respiratory and Allergy Therapies. Dr. Yvonne Shevchuk, BSP, Pharm D Dr. Shevchuk is a Professor and Associate Dean Academic in the College of Pharmacy and Nutrition at the University of Saskatchewan, where her areas of teaching focus on infectious diseases, pharmacotherapeutics, and research methods/evidence-based pharmacotherapy and drug information. She is a long-time member of the Infectious Diseases Service at the Royal University Hospital and is involved in direct patient care. Dr. Shevchuk has extensive committee experience, having served on both the Saskatchewan Formulary Committee and the Drug Quality Assessment Committee since 1991, and on the newly formed Drug Advisory Committee of Saskatchewan since January 2010. Dr. Jim Silvius, BA (Oxon), MD, FRCP Dr. Silvius is an Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine, Division of Geriatric Medicine, University of Calgary, and Medical Director, Pharmacy Services at Alberta Health Services. He maintains a clinical practice in geriatrics at Rockyview General Hospital. His research interests are dementia care, and care delivery: He led the development of the Telehealth Outreach Program for the Department of Medicine, University of Calgary, until 2007. Dr. Silvius has been a member of the Alberta Health and Wellness Expert Committee on Drug Evaluation and Therapeutics since 1999 and Chair since 2004, and was a member of CADTH’s Canadian Optimal Medication Prescribing and Utilization Service Expert Review Committee. Dr. Adil Virani, BSc Pharm, PharmD, FCSHP Dr. Virani is a Director with Lower Mainland Pharmacy Services, which provides clinical and distribution services to hospitals within the Fraser Health Authority, Vancouver Coastal Health, and Providence Health Care, and some in the Provincial Health Services Authority. He is responsible for the Professional Practice portfolio, Residency and Student Education, Academic Detailing, and Pharmacy operations at some sites. He is an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of British Columbia. He is also the lead editor of the Clinical Handbook of Psychotropic Drugs — winner of the 2009 American Journal of Nursing Book of the Year Award — and co-authored the Clinical Handbook of Psychotropic Drugs for Children and Adolescents. Dr. Virani is a member of the Education Working Group of the Therapeutics Initiative in British Columbia and the Human Drug Advisory Panel of the Patented Medicine Prices Review Board, and is a Fellow of the Canadian Society of Hospital Pharmacists.
