Overview of Academic Detailing

Academic Detailing is an important tool to optimize the use of medications. In this project, the components essential to academic detailing interventions are examined and evaluated. Through literature evaluation and consultations with Academic Detailing organizations across Canada and around the world, an array of template recommendations were developed to guide the production of an optimal drug therapy tool for Academic Detailing. As a result, this overview should be an important resource for those considering Academic Detailing and food for thought for seasoned programs looking to enhance the quality and impact of their service.

All materials contained within this resource were reviewed by representatives of all members of the Canadian Academic Detailing Collaboration (CADC). As such, this material attempts to represent the very best of what the Canadian Academic Detailing community has to offer.

The content of the project is divided into the four sections:

  • Needs Assessment and Key Messages
  • Academic Detailer Training and Resource Material
  • Academic Detailing Material
  • Impact Evaluation
  • Appendices

The documentation provided for each section includes both the Evaluation and Template Recommendations (except for the Impact Evaluation section, where no Template Recommendations were required). Also included are 44 appendices that support the information in the four sections.
