Happy 100th Birthday, Dr. Maurice McGregor!

On March 24, Dr. Maurice McGregor turned 100.

Dr. McGregor is affectionately known as the “grandfather of health technology assessment” in Canada. In 2014 CADTH acknowledged his enduring legacy and his immeasurable contributions to Canadian health care by establishing an award in his name. This award is presented annually to “rising stars” in the field of health technology assessment (HTA).

As the founding president of Quebec’s HTA Agency, the Conseil d’évaluation des technologies de la santé du Québec, and a founding board member of the Canadian Coordinating Office for Health Technology Assessment (now known as CADTH), Dr. McGregor was instrumental in building the initial framework for the production and use of HTA in Canada.

In his role as the chair of the HTA unit at the McGill University Health Centre, Dr. McGregor helped extend the use of HTA to hospitals and regional health authorities. He is the author of more than 180 scientific articles and is the former Chair and Editor of Canada’s Guidelines for the Management of Breast Cancer (1994-1998). He has pioneered and championed the use of evidence in clinical practice and has served as an inspirational mentor to new generations of HTA producers and users.

Best wishes and happy birthday, Dr. McGregor!
