CADTH undertook an Environmental Scan survey to assess point-of-care testing (POCT) in Canada. A number of Canadian and international standards specific to POCT exist; however, it has been suggested that there is a need for a general framework to guide the comprehensive and optimal integration of POCT in the Canadian health care system. This Environmental Scan surveyed standards, policies, practices, and issues related to POCT in Canadian jurisdictions.

The primary goal of the project was to identify and analyze evidence and information that could inform how POCT is implemented and managed in jurisdictions across Canada. Consideration was given to POCT performed in urgent and emergent care (such as in hospitals or emergency settings), primary care, community care (such as pharmacies), and by patients (self-testing).
