Key Message

Educational interventions with patients or clinicians may reduce the use of PPIs as shown in the three non-randomized trials. However, these studies were uncontrolled and as such can only assist in generating hypotheses for future research. Clinical practice guidelines on various gastrointestinal diseases provide recommendations on the appropriate use of PPIs.
