Model validation is an important process to ensure economic models are robust and valid for decision-making. In the absence of long-term data, findings from an economic model can be crucial in understanding long-term cost and health consequences associated with funding certain technologies. Therefore, models must be transparent, fit for purpose, and free from error. Comprehensive model validation is needed to ensure these 3 principles are met. Currently, there is a gap for a comprehensive and accessible tool to support both the conceptual and technical aspects of model validation. Through targeted literature searches and consultation with health economists and other health technology assessment organizations, a tool was developed to fill this gap. This tool will help ensure a more consistent and reproducible approach to model validation for economic evaluations of all health technologies.
