In response to the current crisis in emergency care in Canada, CADTH is working on a series of reports to help identify factors contributing to emergency department (ED) overcrowding, identify and describe interventions that can effectively alleviate ED overcrowding, understand the impact of ED overcrowding on quality of care, patient safety, and staff and health professional learners’ well-being, and assess how ED overcrowding has changed over the years.

To help inform these evidence reviews, CADTH conducted a Horizon Scan of new and emerging interventions to alleviate ED overcrowding. This report is intended to complement CADTH’s report Emergency Department Overcrowding: An Environmental Scan of Contributing Factors and a Summary of Systematic Reviews of Intervention Effectiveness. It identifies interventions intended to alleviate ED overcrowding that are not captured in the summary of systematic reviews because they are either new or are not yet in wide use in EDs and health systems across Canada.
